Xeomin: The Unsung Hero Of Anti-Aging

Aging is inevitable for everyone, but that doesn’t necessarily make it enjoyable or acceptable to some people. Noticing fine lines and wrinkles on your face can be unsettling, no matter how old you are.

Fortunately, medical science has evolved to provide incredibly safe and effective anti-aging solutions like Xeomin, a cosmetic injectable.

Cosmetic Injectables

Cosmetic injectables are aesthetic procedures that have grown increasingly popular over the last couple of decades. Most well-known products fall under one of two categories: dermal fillers or neurotoxin injectables.

FILLERS

Dermal fillers add volume under the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production. The injectable ingredients also treat fine lines and wrinkles, and some can augment the lips and contour the face.

NEUROTOXIN INJECTABLES

Neurotoxin injectables work by paralyzing the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles.

These injections do not add volume and cannot be used for feature augmentation procedures.

What Are Neurotoxin Injections?

Neurotoxins are FDA-approved prescription medications that block your body from releasing chemicals that cause muscle contractions in the treated areas. By “freezing” the muscles, your skin can “relax” or settle and will look naturally smoother as a result.

Neurotoxin injections contain a compound called botulinum, derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. In small doses, these substances can be used to block nerve impulses of the treated muscles and temporarily stop muscle-movement-caused wrinkles.

POPULAR NEUROTOXIN INJECTABLES

Popular neurotoxin injectables include Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. Botox and Dysport have very similar formulations and have practically identical applications.

What Is Xeomin?

Xeomin is a newer neurotoxin cosmetic injectable. The FDA initially approved it as a treatment for cervical dystonia, a painful condition that causes your neck muscles to contract involuntarily. It was first introduced on the German market in 2005 but made its way to America and FDA approval in 2010.

Xeomin is remarkably different from other neurotoxins because of its formulation. While its botulinum toxin is purified in all forms of cosmetic injectables, Xeomin contains a “naked” purified form of botulinum.

Botox and Dysport contain accessory proteins already present in botulinum toxin type A. The Xeomin formula delivers botulinum without any protein additives.

This more purified structure of Xeomin is designed to help prevent your body’s antibody resistance.

ANTIBODY RESISTANCE WITH COSMETIC INJECTABLES

Neurotoxin injections have temporary results, which last an average of three to six months. Because of this, neurotoxin injections require maintenance injections in order to maintain results.

When evaluating the repetitive nature of neurotoxin injection treatment, medical professionals theorize that the treatment may become less effective over time due to antibody resistance.

Antibody resistance happens when your body generates the ability to resist treatment effects. Because Xeomin is formulated without accessory proteins, there is significant evidence demonstrating that Xeomin has a decreased risk of developing neutralizing antibodies, meaning your treatment will last longer and be more effective.

WHAT XEOMIN DOES AND ONSET OF ACTION

Xeomin, like other neurotoxins, reduces fine lines and wrinkles on your face. It’s particularly effective when treating frown lines. Frown lines are those fine to severe lines on your forehead between your eyebrows that become more visible when you frown.

Xeomin starts working as soon as it’s injected into your muscles, making it a much quicker solution than Botox.

Is Xeomin Right for You?

The best anti-aging treatment plan is the one designed specifically for you by a medical expert. When seeking cosmetic treatments, we perform a thorough evaluation to determine which tools will help you best achieve your aesthetic goals. For many, Xeomin is a piece of the puzzle.

If you’ve already been receiving regular neurotoxin injections and have noticed they aren’t working the same way they used to, consider Xeomin. Your body may have built up antibody resistance to whatever injectable you were getting, and Xeomin could be the solution to help you get the results you want.

Some patients have even reported that Xeomin feels more flexible than other neurotoxin injectables. If your skin is particularly sensitive to texture and feeling, Xeomin could be a more appropriate injection for you.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

While there aren’t necessarily any pre-appointment steps you have to take, some may help to optimize your treatment results.

Before your Xeomin appointment, avoid anti-inflammatory medications and supplements. In some cases, you may want to avoid foods higher in antioxidants like green tea, cinnamon, ginger, and red wine. If possible, consume more vegetables that contain vitamin K leading up to the appointment.

It’s best to arrive at your appointment without makeup. You’ll be able to apply makeup right after your Xeomin treatment, but showing up bare-faced helps save time.

What Will Happen During Your Xeomin Appointment

Your Xeomin injection appointment will usually last under an hour. The actual treatment itself usually takes around 10-20 minutes.

Xeomin is minimally invasive, so no anesthesia will be required. In some cases, your provider may offer a topical treatment or cooling treatment to help increase your comfort.

During treatment, your provider injects Xeomin into your treatment area’s muscles. There’s no downtime post-treatment, and you can immediately resume your day.

What to Do After Your Appointment

After your appointment you may want to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications for a few days.
