WHAT ARE “BOTOX-TYPE” INJECTABLES?

Botulinum toxin type A are a family of an injectable neurotoxins, better known by their brand names: Botox Cosmetic®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, & Jeuveau® among others used to smooth wrinkles that form as a result of facial movements like frowning, squinting, smiling, and other expressions we tend to make day after day. Botox-type injectables works by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles, causing them to relax, softening expressions and reducing dynamic wrinkles. 

 

WHAT CAN BOTOX-TYPE INJECTABLES TREAT?

Botox-type injectables are used most commonly to treat areas of facial movement, such as:

  • Glabellar lines (aka “elevens” or frown lines)
  • Wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Forehead creases
  • Corners of the mouth
  • Dimpled appearance to the chin

 

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRANDS?

At sculp|MD we use Xeomin, Jeuveau, and Dysport brands of FDA approved botox-like injectables, all have been used safely and effectively to treat wrinkles. Choosing one brand over another depends on your unique anatomy, goals, and aesthetic physician’s recommendations. The main difference between brands is in their formulation, which can influence the dosage used, how much the product spreads, and how quickly a patient might see the results.

 

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Onset of action usually takes 2-4 days, with full effect usually occuring within 14 days of treatment, and last 3-4 months.

 

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE?

The ideal candidate to receive botox-type injectable treatment is a patient who has maintained good skin quality and minimal to moderate tissue laxity, who may not be ready to undergo permanent, surgical treatment options. Botox-type injectables for those seeking a temporary and cost-effective method for addressing facial expression wrinkles, enlarged jaw muscles due to overuse larger and other areas. 

 

Side Effects, Risks, and Complications

In general, Botulinum toxin type A treatments are usually well-tolerated, but there are a few things to be aware of before your treatment. It is common to experience redness (erythema) and dryness, including the related shedding of skin. You may also experience an allergic reaction, swelling, bruising or infection of the injection site or feel warm, tight or itchy. It is also normal to feel dizzy, have general muscle weakness or experience vision problems. These issues usually clear up within 12-48 hours.
